The Nordstrom Innovation Lab is a new, and growing, team. They act like a startup inside of a large company: They move through ideas quickly, using whichever technologies make sense. Also they walk the agile walk: the lab is a collaborative workspace with stickies and note cards everywhere, and  following agile engineering practices like pairing and test-driven development. On the customer-facing side, using  ideas from both lean manufacturing and lean startup, and test the experiments with customers using human-centered design strategies and tactics.

Nordstrom is currently ranked #254 on the Fortune 500 with over $9 billion in revenues. Scrappy startup they are not. And yet they face the same competitive pressures that are causing every modern company to take a long, hard look at the process they use to innovate.
